A Louisville fan reportedly was removed from Rupp Arena after chucking a water bottle onto the court during No. 9 Creighton’s 89-75 win over No. 8 Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

The incident occurred with 4:41 to go in the second half and Creighton pulling away. Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey received a technical foul for barking at an official and stepping on the court.

“I got frustrated, said something I shouldn’t have said, and he T’d me up,” Kelsey told reporters in Lexington, Ky. “Far less than an ideal time to get a technical.”

During the ensuing break in action, a water bottle was thrown from behind the Creighton bench and onto the court, the spilling requiring a game-delaying cleanup.

“I felt a splash when it landed,” Creighton coach Greg McDermott told reporters.

Citing a police officer at the arena, The Athletic reported the bottle-thrower was a Louisville fan.

“That was a full bottle of water. That was very dangerous, and it went right over the Creighton bench,” play-by-player Brian Anderson said on the CBS broadcast. “I’ll tell ya, whoever did that should never be allowed to come into this arena again.”

“You get upset about a call. So what? You don’t do this because you’ve got players on both ends that can be affected by that,” analyst Jim Jackson added.

Kelsey said he didn’t see the thrower.

“It’s unfortunate, but it happened,” Kelsey said.
