Rutgers men’s basketball is targeting June 22 for its return to campus, coach Steve Pikiell said Monday after participating in a call between athletic department leadership and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy.
The date coincides with the start of the second summer class period. The current session consists of virtual learning as campus remains closed to all students.
Basketball players would be limited to voluntary individual indoor workouts, with meetings and strength training possibly moved outdoors. Pikiell said all involved would be subject to frequent coronavirus testing, though the specific details have not been ironed out. Rutgers football has not announced a return date.
St. John’s begins its second summer class session July 6 but will only have men’s basketball players back for workouts if New York Governor Andrew Cuomo allows students back on campus for a hybrid schedule by then.
