St. John’s is in need of a new general manager for its men’s basketball program, The Post has confirmed.

The school is firing Matt Abdelmassih, who had held the position during the entire Rick Pitino era, athletic director Ed Kull told The Post. Abdelmassih had been on administrative leave dating back to the Kentucky game Dec. 20.

Kull declined to address the exact circumstances of what led to Abdelmassih’s dismissal. St. John’s is actively looking for his replacement. Pitino said after Tuesday’s 92-68 rout of Marquette, he has three candidates in mind.

One of them, Tom Ostrom, was on hand for the victory. Ostrom spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach under Darian DeVries at Drake and West Virginia.

“It’s out of my hands. All I was told was four days ago, look for another general manager,” Pitino said. “They said to me, don’t ask any questions. It’s really not a big deal. What’s a big deal is making sure that we don’t lose anything. But that’s a university decision, I’ll abide by it. They didn’t ask for my opinion and I didn’t give it.

“I’m disappointed that somebody loses their job with four young kids, yes, but it’s not a big deal in terms of our basketball program, and we’ll move on.”

The school has been looking into financial deals made by Abdelmassih, and the decision to move on from him is believed to be at least somewhat connected, according to sources. Along with Pitino and associate head coach Steve Masiello, Abdelmassih oversaw St. John’s recruiting in the name, image and likeness (NIL) era. The year’s budget is thought to be north of $10 million and near the top of the Big East.

Pitino had the final say in recruiting, and which players St. John’s targeted and brought in, while Abdelmassih negotiated deals with those players and their representatives. Through the years, he developed a reputation as a top-notch recruiter with a firm grasp of the transfer portal landscape.

“It really doesn’t matter to me what the cost of a player is going to be — I really try not to [worry about it],” Pitino said last spring. “We have a general manager that does that. I tell him, ‘Go raise the money. I don’t even want to know what you’re paying him, just make sure we get him.’ ”

A St. John’s alum, Abdelmassih has worked as an assistant at Nebraska and Iowa State under Fred Hoiberg and served in that same capacity on former coach Chris Mullin’s staff in Queens.

He was also a student manager for three years while Norm Roberts was the head coach. Abdelmassih was briefly a sports agent for college basketball players before taking on the job as Pitino’s general manager.

Abdelmassih had a major hand in St. John’s best season in 25 years last winter, bringing in several key players to that team — notably Kadary Richmond, Deivon Smith and Aaron Scott. Those Johnnies won 31 games, and the Big East regular season and tournament titles.

He was instrumental in St. John’s putting together the top-ranked transfer class in the country this past offseason, according to 247Sports.com.

The Johnnies were ranked fifth in the preseason, the highest ever for the program. That group started slow, but has shown signs of improvement, having run off three straight blowouts to move to 5-1 in league play.
