LOS ANGELES — A new drama about cable news by Oscar-winning scribe Aaron Sorkin has been picked up by HBO, Deadline reported Thursday.

Actor Jeff Daniels will star in the show as a news anchor, while English actress Emily Mortimer will play Daniels’ executive producer and “Law & Order” veteran Sam Waterston will appear as their boss.

“Together they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements,” according to a description from HBO.

Actresses Alison Pill and Olivia Munn and “Slumdog Millionaire” star Dev Patel will also appear on the new show as newsroom staff.

The pilot had previously been called “More As This Story Develops” but the show’s title has not yet been announced.

Filming is expected to begin later this year.
