Stifling a sneaking suspicion that we were doing something wrong as we skulked furtively into the jazzy den of Circa Tabac, we were elated to find a host of like-minded outcasts puffing away in a blissful purple haze.

This Art Deco SoHo parlor, billed as New York’s only cigarette lounge, is a fantastic bar in its own right. And since it is one of only a handful of places where you’re still able to indulge the symbiotic delights of booze and tobacco, the clientele is fast expanding beyond regulars.

The decor is inspired: Shady curtains spotted with a palm-leaf motif hide the lounge from the street, spongy velvet armchairs and candlelit round tables dot the floor space, and the mahogany bar is inlaid with stainless steel.

It’s all very roaring ’20s – and the heavy emphasis on the now-taboo art of the smoke makes it feel even more like a Prohibition-era speakeasy, complete with vintage cigarette paraphernalia.

Circa Tabac offers an agreeable range of wine, champagne cocktails and martinis to complement a “cigarette menu” that boasts over 150 brands, from Indian Bidis and Egypt’s Cleopatra Luxe to Double Happiness Ginseng from china.

And a number of state-of-the-art purifiers make the air inside this smoker’s haven cleaner than that spewing from the nearby Holland Tunnel.
