“American Idol” runner-up Willie Spence reportedly passed away Tuesday due to injuries from a car accident. He was 23.
Local news outlet Douglas Now reported that the Season 19 star was in Tennessee at the time of the incident, but no further details are available.
Katharine McPhee seems to have confirmed Spence’s death in her Instagram Story, sharing videos in his memory. The singer performed a duet with the “American Idol” runner-up during his time on the show.
“I received very tragic news tonight. Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old,” wrote McPhee, 38. “Life is so unfair and nothing is ever promised. God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.”
She also shared the last video Spence shared on his social media, which captures him singing a Christian song in a car.
“He posted this right before the accident,” McPhee wrote with a sobbing emoji and a broken heart emoji.

Spence auditioned for “Idol” with a cover of “Diamonds” by Rihanna, earning a “Yes” from all three judges and bringing him to the next round.
