The comedian, 52, got a death stare from the pop star that set the internet aflame, after he made a joke about the NFL’s embrace of Swift, following her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
Reflecting on the now-viral moment after the show, Koy told ET, “Maybe she was thirsty? Maybe she just needed to drink the Champagne.”
During the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday night, Koy made a joke about the NFL’s outsized interest in Swift when she attends Kelce’s games.
He said, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL is that at the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”
The broadcast cut to Swift sitting at a table and shooting the comedian a glare while sipping a drink.

“Congrats you pissed off the most intense fandom. Enjoy your snakes,” one fan commented on Koy’s Instagram account.
Another fan wrote on the same Instagram post: “Unnecessary rude joke about TS. JUST not nice! Being a host doesn’t mean insulting people. It’s not a roast. There are classy ways to go about things.”

Taylor Swift’s concert film was nominated for cinematic and box office achievement and lost to “Barbie.” FilmMagicOne fan commented, “That joke wasn’t even horrible! But she just ended this guy’s career with one glare. ‘OH you’re the guy Taylor Swift glared at on national television!’ ”
Another fan added, “That Taylor Swift death glare was the nail in the coffin,” referring to the general consensus that Koy bombed.
Koy later admitted that he regretted the Swift joke altogether while appearing on GMA 3.
“Maybe she was thirsty? Maybe she just needed to drink the Champagne,” Jo Koy said. ET“I think it was when the Taylor [Swift] one was just a little flat,” he said. “It was a weird joke, I guess.”
“But it was more on the NFL… I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that,” Koy explained, referring to how the league has developed a fascination with the singer.
“So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way,” Koy admitted.
Swift was at the Golden Globes without Kelce, who was miles away playing against the Los Angeles Chargers. She was there because she was nominated for cinematic and box office achievement in motion pictures for her concert doc, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” She lost, and the smash hit “Barbie” won.

“I was just saying it was cute,” Jo Koy said. ETKoy elaborated to ET on Sunday, “Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute,” he said, referring to the NFL camera often panning to Swift at Kelce’s games.
“I was just saying it’s less cutaways, that’s all.”
