The 87th Academy Awards averaged 36.6 million viewers on ABC Sunday night, its lowest viewership since 2009.
The nearly 3½-hour telecast — hosted by Neil Patrick Harris — fell 15 percent from 2014, when 43 million watched with host Ellen DeGeneres, the awards show’s largest audience in 10 years. The program earned a 10.8 rating in the “money” demo of adults under 50, which represented a 16 percent drop from 2014.
The Oscars still towered over this year’s other big awards shows, the Golden Globes (19.3 million) and the Grammy Awards (24.8 million).
According to Nielsen SocialGuide, the Oscars generated 5.9 million tweets (down from 11.2 million last year), with the most-tweeted moment happening during Lady Gaga’s “Sound of Music” tribute and Julie Andrews’ appearance.
ABC’s “Oscar’s Red Carpet Live” special drew 24.3 million in its final half-hour, down 12 percent. “Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Oscars” saw its second-largest-ever audience (5.8 million viewers), behind only last year’s special.
The night’s big winner was “Birdman,” which picked up Oscars for Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture.
