‘B’ MARKS THE SPOT
The poster reads “Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics.”
That’s all the Bar Belles needed to see hanging on the wall just inside Bar B to know that we’d found ourselves another winner.
As the poster indicates, the cheerful crowd at this new-ish Allen Street hang (it opened last year in the long, narrow space formerly occupied by Niva) isn’t just there to drink: Music is a big draw chez B – and not just the kind that would make Tipper Gore blush.
Most nights at the bar start with a mellow acoustic musician or small band (make that very small: There ain’t much room on Bar B’s slightly elevated, mirror-lined “stage”), followed by deejays spinning the requisite hip-hop tracks until 4 a.m.
Not to say there aren’t folks who come just to drink at Bar B’s surprisingly smart-looking bar, backed with mirrored mahogany shelves.
We were in a reflective, red-wine kinda mood the night we first stumbled in, though there were plenty of other folks taking advantage of the boite’s $3 beer specials – that and Bar B’s signature quaff: The Peter Colada, which mixes raspberry beer with vodka, that packs a sweet kick.
Bar B: 188 Allen St. (between Houston and Stanton streets); (212) 982-5336.
