“Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice” shook off awful reviews faster than a speeding bullet, scoring a monster $170.1 million in opening-weekend receipts, industry estimates revealed on Sunday.
Despite a putrid 29-percent approval rating on critic aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes, “Batman vs. Superman” is now the No. 1 opening-weekend flick in the history of DC Comics films. It notched the biggest weekend ever scored by any movie in March.
Disney’s animated movie “Zootopia,” in its fourth weekend of release, came in second at $23.1 million.
“It’s the fans that speak the loudest,” said Jeff Bock, a box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “It proves how strong these characters are.”
