It’s East Coast vs. West Coast next weekend, when die-hard music fans around the country don their favorite rock T-shirts for two of the biggest multiday music festivals of the year.

The storied Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., represents everything alternative rock, while the newly minted Bamboozle in Asbury Park, N.J., is a love letter to the punk and emo genres.

On the surface, Coachella is more impressive, consistently drawing big-name acts – last year’s lineup included Radiohead and the Cure – but Bamboozle prides itself on being a training ground for bands on their way to main-stage status. (Expect to see major label A&R guys scouting bands).

Both festivals feature the hottest acts in their respective scenes and can include unannounced sets. Last year’s Coachella included a “secret” show by Beck, and Bamboozle organizers hint at surprise guests.
