TOUCH THE SOUND *** (three stars)
DID you hear the one about the deaf musician? No, this isn’t a sick joke – it’s the true story of Scottish-born Evelyn Glennie, a virtuoso percussionist who’s been deaf since age 12.
She doesn’t need to hear – she feels sounds from within, through the vibrations they emit.
Her doctor said the child would never have a career in music. Was he ever wrong, as we see in the joyful documentary “Touch the Sound,” directed and written by Thomas Riedelsheimer.
The filmmaker follows the 40-year-old Grammy winner as she travels the world, from an abandoned warehouse in Germany to a Zen garden in Tokyo to New York’s Grand Central Terminal, where she performs a snare-drum solo. Call this a profile in courage.
Running time: 99 minutes. Not rated (nothing objectionable). At the IFC Center, Sixth Avenue and Third Street.
