Canary flies the ‘AMC’ coop
‘A
ll My Children” is losing its silver-haired elder statesman.
David Canary, who has played tycoon Adam Chandler since 1983, will leave the long-running soap at the end of April, ABC has announced.
In a statement, Canary said, “My career on ‘All My Children’ has given me more than words could ever convey, both professionally and personally. I have cherished each and every moment. I would like to thank all the fans who have tuned in throughout the years. Their love and support has meant the world to me.” Canary, 71, is working in Los Angeles on the show, but he lives in Connecticut. Commuting to New York to tape the show was never a problem for the five-time Emmy winner; he did not want to relocate permanently to LA.
With his lean frame and chiseled good looks, Canary gave “AMC” one of its few touches of natural elegance. He was also the best actor on the show, as the Emmys clearly affirm; in addition to the wily Adam, Canary also played Adam’s twin brother Stuart, who was a simpler character, without any of his brother’s lust for power.
When he wasn’t pulling the strings in business, Adam Chandler was manipulating the women in his life, resorting to blackmail, gaslighting and other forms of bedevilment to bring them to heel. He was twice married to Erica Kane, the aging vixen played since Day One on the show by Susan Lucci.
The show promises that Adam will go out with a bang. His marriage to his current wife, Annie (Melissa Claire Egan), will end miserably and he will have a reunion with one of his former ex-wives. There have been so many.
