In making his newest comedy, “Master of Disguise,” kooky comic Dana Carvey was on a mission he hoped wouldn’t be impossible.
“I tried to make a PG movie that seemed like a PG-13, but was trickily actually a PG – so my kids would want to see it,” says Carvey, whose two boys are 8 and 10.
“But it’s disappointing to them. PG-13 means cool and PG means baby. We have a hard time getting out of the house for a PG.”
“Master of Disguise” is about a family from Italy who are – duh – masters of disguise. “Their family name is the Disguiseys,” says Carvey, who co-wrote the movie and dons at least a dozen get-ups.
“You’d think it would tip people off, but it doesn’t.”
Finding it’s too dangerous a life, the family moves to America and opens a restaurant. There, Carvey says, his character (Pistachio Disguisey) “is like a freak, who mimics people, disguises himself and puts underwear on his head – for no apparent reason.”
In a PG movie, Carvey says, there are certain things the studios want. “A kid and a dog. You gotta have a dog,” he says. “In ‘Master of Disguise,’ the dog is named The Cuteness.
“He rides a skateboard. With PG, you gotta have a skateboard. And you’ve gotta have a grumpy old man.”
