It's all in the family!

Antique jewelry is more than just a family heirloom for royals, and many pieces have a history that can be traced back decades or even hundreds of years.

"Antique jewelry plays a key role in royal tradition, often passed down through generations. From Princess Beatrice to Princess Kate, royal women are frequently seen wearing historical pieces at official events," said royal jewelry expert Emma Snowdon, Creative Director at London jeweler Berganza.

Take, for one: The Fringe Tiara that the late Queen Elizabeth II's granddaughter Princess Beatrice, who celebrates her 37th birthday Friday, wore on her wedding day in July 2020.

"A notable example is Princess Beatrice’s choice of Queen Mary’s Fringe tiara for her wedding — a piece first worn by Queen Elizabeth II on her own wedding day in 1947."

The crown was "originally created by Garrard [one of the monarchy's favorite jewelers] in 1919 for Queen Mary using diamonds from a wedding gift," Snowdon said.

"These items are valued not just for their design, but for their deep ties to family history and heritage."

Princess Beatrice turns 37 on Friday, and one expert has the lowdown on why jewelry would be a fitting gift for the working royal — including which gems she might expect to get.

"Princess Beatrice's 37th birthday marks a significant moment in her life, particularly as she's embraced her role as a mother of two and a more prominent working royal," said Emma Snowdon, Creative Director at Berganza jewelers.

"A thoughtful gift of jewelry would likely reflect this new chapter," Snowdon said.

"We could see a piece that combines the sentimental with the sophisticated, perhaps a modern design that incorporates a traditional, symbolic element.

"Whether it’s a bespoke piece created for a special occasion or a treasured heirloom passed down through generations, these gifts often mark key chapters in a royal’s life."

As for the type of jewelry to mark the occasion for Beatrice, first cousin of Princes William and Harry, Snowdon says, "a brooch, for example, is a classic royal piece often passed down, and a new one would not only be elegant but also a fitting nod to her role.

"Sapphires, for example, are traditionally associated with loyalty and wisdom, while pearls symbolise purity and integrity, all qualities that resonate with her public role."

The blue stone also makes an appearance in Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales' 12-carat sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring, the same one the late Princess Diana received from King (then Prince) Charles in 1981.

The type of gemstones in the pieces also holds significance to the royal family.

Gemstones "could also carry a deeper, symbolic meaning that acknowledges her growth and responsibilities," Snowdon said.

This wouldn't be the first instance of birthday jewels for a royal.

According to Snowdon, "Princess Kate has received several meaningful jewellery gifts from Prince William over the years, including a Cartier necklace, which is thought to be a gift for her 30th Birthday."

The Cartier Trinity necklace featured a series of rings on a long chain.

She said yes!

Peter Phillips, son of the late Queen Elizabeth II's only daughter Princess Anne, proposed to pediatric nurse and mom-of-one Harriet Sperling last week.

The royal popped the question to his girlfriend of over a year with a ring designed by the jeweler Pragnell.

The ring "appears to be a timeless trilogy design, likely showcasing a central oval or round diamond, flanked by trapeze-cut or triangular side stones," Tobias Kormind, cofounder of the jewelry brand 77 Diamonds, said.

"A similar design with diamonds of comparable quality and size crafted at 77 Diamonds would typically be priced from around £10,000 (equivalent to over $13,200 USD) with the final price reflecting individual choices in cut, carat, and craftsmanship," Kormind said.

Pragnell is a royal favorite, and had provided pieces to Queen Elizabeth's grandmother, Queen Mary, and created Queen Elizabeth's three-carat diamond ring in 1946.

"As a young man, he was instructed to entertain the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret as their grandmother perused the jewels on display," an excerpt from Pragnell's website said.

As for the upcoming nuptials, "both families were informed jointly of the announcement and were delighted with the wonderful news of their engagement," a statement on behalf of the couple that was published by Hello! said.

"Their Majesties The King and Queen, The Prince and Princess of Wales have been informed of the announcement. No date has been officially set for the wedding."

The UK's hardest-working, horse-loving royal.

The royal family shared new images Thursday of Princess Anne, 74, attending the opening day of Dublin's Horse Show at the Royal Dublin Society.

"During the visit, Her Royal Highness toured a special exhibition on the history of the Horse Show and met representatives from Festina Lenté, a Bray-based charity which offers equine-assisted learning and therapy services," The Firm wrote in its Instagram post.

"The Princess also met members of the Riding for the Disabled Association Ireland."

In the photos, Princess Anne — only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and sister to King Charles III — can be smiling as she engages with staff, guests and even the horses themselves.

It wasn't long ago that the Princess Royal sustained a ghastly head injury after a horse-related accident in June 2024, which resulted in a five-day hospital stay. Princess Anne has spoken publicly about the incident, saying that she "can't remember a single thing" about the mishap.

The princess has since recovered and still holds horses close to her heart.

Users quickly flooded the comments on Thursday's IG post to praise her work ethic.

"When you're born third in line, end up 18...and still blow the main players out of the water..The Princess Royal is the true gem of the working royals. Hands down," one royal watcher wrote.

"The Princess Royal always seems interested in what she does and people she meets, but especially so when it's agriculture and moreso when it has to do with horses. I believe that's the secret of the royal family is they really care," another said.

Another said simply, "Princess Anne is such a legend!!!"

Princess Anne was revealed to be the "hardest-working member" of the royal family in 2023, as she consistently takes on more royal events than any other person in the Windsor clan.

If the shoe fits.

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, was recently seen wearing some interesting footwear while signing copies of her novel, "Her Heart for a Compass," at legendary luxury hotel Claridge's in London.

Fergie's custom loafers, navy blue with a small heel, are embroidered with the royal family's unofficial motto: "Never complain" on one foot and "Never explain" on the other.

Ferguson, 65 — disgraced Prince Andrew's ex-wife and mother of their two daughters, Princess Beatrice, 36, and Princess Eugenie, 35 — previously wore them in 2022.

"There has been a long tradition in the British royal family of riding criticism out and keeping your head down and taking the long view," royal biographer Penny Junor said of the phrase The Firm follows.

"Crises come and go, and people get criticized — often for five minutes by the media, who then move on."

Her shoe choice is well-timed, coming as excerpts from an upcoming biography "Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York" by Andrew Lownie, are making headlines with explosive claims about Fergie and ex-husband Prince Andrew, Duke of York — particularly regarding their alleged infidelities. 

Among them, a report that Prince Andrew allegedly slept with "more than a dozen women" during the first year of his marriage to Fergie, and details about her extramarital affairs with millionaire Texas oil baron Steve Wyatt and his friend John Bryan according to an excerpt from the book.

In another shocking revelation, the bio says Prince Andrew "would dine alone off a tray in his study while Sarah and one of her lovers ate together elsewhere in the house."

"Friends say Andrew accepted his wife's infidelities and that his marriage was over," the book claims.

Despite their divorce in 1996, the two continue to live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor. They were seen driving together earlier this week, spotted for the first since the bombshell book excerpts came out.
