The Duke of Edinburgh, aka Prince Edward, will honor Carter at his funeral on Jan. 9 at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

The news was announced in the royal family's official diary.

Carter passed away Dec. 29. He was 100.

It is understood that there is not precedence for heads of state to attend funerals of former presidents.

As one of the most senior members of the royal family, the attendance of Charles' youngest brother, 60, is meant to show respect for the American people.

Edward, who is 14th in line for the throne, has had an increasingly public profile since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (the Duke and Duchess of Sussex) stepped down from their roles as senior working royals in 2020.

Though King Charles won't be among those at the National Cathedral, president-elect Trump has announced he will attend.

"It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of former President Carter," the King said in a statement shared Sunday on social media.

"He was a committed public servant, and devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights. His dedication and humility served as an inspiration to many, and I remember with great fondness his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977."

The sovereign added, "My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter's family and the American people at this time."

Five major ways Prince William will change the Firm when he is crowned king

By Alexandra Bellusci

The tea is pipping hot when it comes to the royal family's future.

Prince William has allegedly prepped a five-point plan of changes for the monarchy to implement when he one day becomes King.

According to a source per Express, the plan includes a slimmer monarchy than the one King Charles, 76, has in place. The Prince of Wales intends to have fewer royal engagements and patronages, less formality, and a goodbye to the beloved Commonwealth.

The outlet also claims the plan could see William shift the focus onto solely the Wales family, with scaled-down coronation and ceremonies.

Despite these claims having not yet been confirmed, William previously described his future aim to be Royal with a small "r".

While in Cape Town last year, the Prince revealed: "I’m trying to do it differently and I'm trying to do it for my generation. And to give you more of an understanding around it, I'm doing it with maybe a smaller a smaller R in the royal. It's more about impact philanthropy, collaboration, convening, and helping people."
