SWEET TOOTH
To celebrate the opening of the 9th Season of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the chefs must work in teams to create a cake based on a classical music theme as part of the elimination challenge and then serve them to the symphony members and patrons after their performance. Gail Simmons, Hubert Keller and pastry chef Johnny Iuzzini are the judges. “I ate a lot that day,” says Simmons. “I was the fullest I’ve ever been. It was hard to stop eating.” Simmons elaborates, saying that the most common ingredients used by the 13 bakers were vanilla, fruit and butter cream. “They all do a beautiful job, but I think the right person wins.”

MICHELLE’S STORY
ALL the rules seemed to be suspended for Michelle Obama’s trip last June to South Africa. Mistrust of the America and American motives runs deep in South Africa — where leaders worry that US power will overwhelm the still-new democracy. But for the First Lady, the wife of the first African-American president, it seemed that every door was open. Michelle’s story — from the south side of Chicago to the White House — was the kind of thing a young African nation wanted badly to hear. Former CNN reporter Lola Ogunnaike (above left) anchors her first solo special for BET, a smart start.
