Drama mama
Mama checks in with dramas that are trying to avoid the mid-October TV doldrums:
*“Sons of Anarchy” (Tuesday, 10 p.m., FX) After last season’s Irish jig fell flat, SAMCRO returned to full force this year, producing its best season thus far. This week demonstrated why this drama is as good as any show on the air: whether its Clay’s (Ron Perlman) secret deal with Romeo (Danny Trejo) to murder future daughter-in-law Tara (Maggie Siff), Wayne’s (Dayton Callie) attempt to foil the plan or Juice (Theo Rossi) betraying the club, the biker gang’s story runs at full throttle when the struggle comes from within.
*“Luther” (Wednesday, 10 p.m., BBC America) The best thing Mama can say about Season 2 of the slit-your-wrist police drama is that it was quick, ending the hour-long torture sessions after just four episodes. Did the rescued teen prostitute really have to kill the dirty cop in Luther’s (Idris Elba) crumbling apartment?
*“CSI: Miami” (Sunday, 10 p.m., CBS) Carlos Bernard, best known as Tony Almeida from “24,” begins a stint as Diego Navarro, a serial killer who takes women’s eyes. Which is about the only crime Tony didn’t commit.
*“Fringe” (Friday, 9 p.m., Fox) It took three episodes for Walter (John Noble) to realize he’s sane, although shoving an icepick into your eye socket as a DIY lobotomy might suggest otherwise. But can we finally bring Peter (Joshua Jackson) back from extinction so we can witness the long-awaited showdown between Walter and Walternate?
*“The Good Wife” (Sunday, 9 p.m., CBS) Mama’s not sure what happened this season to her favorite legal drama, but Sunday’s episode was bad. Really bad. Lisa Edelstein arrived as Will’s (Josh Charles) ex in what was a way-too-obvious shoehorning of a spoiler for Alicia (Julianna Margulies) and Will’s burgeoning relationship. Alan Cumming has been particularly wasted this season as the rascally Eli, and his cheesy cases are making Mama long for another election.
