Perhaps as proof that Asian-Americans can be goofy too, this year’s Asian American International Film Festival opens with an early screening of “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle,” a stoner comedy directed by Danny Leiner, who did “Dude, Where’s My Car?”

The film, which opens nationwide on July 30, bills itself as starring “that Asian guy from ‘American Pie,'” John Cho and “that Indian guy from ‘Malibu’s Most Wanted,'” Kal Penn. And it is a far cry from other, more serious films being screened, such as “Travellers and Magicians,” a film about a Bhutanese man trying to come to America.

The 10-day fest, which in the past has served as a springboard for such directors as Ang Lee, Wayne Wang, Mira Nair and Zhang Yimou, will screen more than 100 features, shorts, documentaries and animations.

The festival opens tonight and runs through July 24 around the city. Tickets are $10. Call (212) 327-9341 or visit http://www.asiasociety.org.
