Elwood Edwards, the voice of AOL’s iconic “You’ve Got Mail” greeting, has died.

Edwards passed away Tuesday, the day before his birthday, following a long illness. He was 74. His death was announced by his former employer, WKYC-TV Studios, in Cleveland. The local news network did not provide additional details about his illness.

A longtime fixture at WKYC, Edwards had many roles while working at the TV station, including graphics guru, camera operator and general jack-of-all-trades.

It was in 1989 that he recorded the famous “You’ve Got Mail” audio for the then-mostly unknown internet provider, America Online. Edwards’ wife worked for a company that later became AOL, which approached him to record four lines of voiceover: “Welcome,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Files done” and “Goodbye.”

Edwards was paid $200 for the gig.

AOL expanded rapidly in the early 1990s, eventually becoming the largest internet service in the US at the time. As a result, Edwards’ voice — and his “You’ve Got Mail” greeting, in particular — was internationally recognized and virtually synonymous with the internet and email. His AOL audio even inspired Nora Ephron’s 1998 Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail.” His voiceovers were included in the movie.

Though AOL lost its stranglehold on the email business, Elwood’s voice remained famous. In 2015, he made an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

In a segment called “Audience Suggestion Box, a viewer wrote in to say they’d love to hear what “that voice” synonymous with the AOL greeting would sound like with phrases other than those used by the dial-up internet service. “Can you make that happen?” the viewer asked.

“I remember that well,” Fallon said. “We found out whose voice that was. It’s a real guy. And we asked him to come on our show,” he added, before introducing Edwards.

Fallon then asked Edwards to say the classic “You’ve Got Mail” line to prove his identity, which he did to the studio audience’s delight.

“That’s worth the price of admission right there,” Fallon said with a laugh. To oblige the original request from a “Tonight Show” viewer, the late-night host then asked Edwards to say three very not-AOL phrases: “Uptown Funk,” “Adele Dazeem” (a reference to John Travolta’s butchering Idina Menzel’s name at the 2014 Oscars) and, lastly, “Dat Ass Tho.”

After that phrase, Edwards retreated to the safety of his AOL phrases. “File’s done. Goodbye!” he said before exiting.
