Continuing its transition from well-kept secret to the next Park Slope, Brooklyn neighborhood Fort Greene has reached another milestone: its first wine bar.
Stonehome Wine Bar owner Bill Stenehjem is a 20-year Fort Greene resident with a surprising background: He spent 15 years in the public high-school system as an intervention counselor. “It’s an interesting segue,” he says with a laugh. “I like to mix it up a bit.”
Stonehome stocks 140 types of wine, available by the glass, the bottle or in flights of three half-glasses for tasting.
To make sure patrons don’t get too tipsy too fast, Stenehjem has put together a light menu as well, featuring panini and a selection of cheeses.
Does he ever miss his job as an anti-alcohol advocate?
“I spent much of my life in intense situations,” he says. “I’ve paid my dues. Now I’m going to do something for me – and my neighborhood.”
