GREG’S ‘DAY’ BREAK
GREG Kelly is the new co-anchor of “Good Day New York.”
Starting Monday, he joins “GDNY” co-anchor Jodi Applegate, who’d been working with a rotating roster of co-hosts – including Kelly – since Ron Corning was shown the door last April.
Kelly – the son of NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly – joins “GDNY” from sister network Fox News Channel, where he was an anchor/reporter and FNC’s White House correspondent from 2005-07. And he’s no stranger to the lighter side of morning TV.
“I had pretty good training over the last year-and-a-half when I was at ‘Fox & Friends Weekend,’ which is a typical morning variety show,” Kelly said yesterday.
“I’ve always felt comfortable doing hard news and the lighter stuff . . . so this won’t be too much of an adjustment to make.”
He’s also a Marine Corps vet and, while at FNC, was embedded with the US Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade, in 2003.
“What I like in an anchor, and we’re seeing more of this in TV, is someone who has a background in something other than journalism,” he said.
“And not everyone in New York TV has a New York background, and I do. I grew up on Long Island and went to school at Fordham – so I bring some life experience not everyone else has had.”
So would Kelly interview his father if the situation warranted?
“I’ve interviewed him [on-air] before but those occasions were a special treat, very light stuff, where we acknowledged at the beginning that he’s my dad,” he said.
“But I’ve got Jodi [Applegate] right there, so more often than not it would be her [interviewing his father].”
Kelly is currently a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves – meaning there’s a chance he could be called up for duty and have to leave the show for a while.
“Technically that’s a possibility,” he said, “but there’s no need for folks like me at this time.”
