The disastrous performance of the Rosie O’Donnell variety show has not deterred programmers from wanting to try again to launch another musical program.

This time, though, a star won’t headline an hour of skits and medleys. Instead, “Glee,” the series now being readied for a spring 2009 debut on Fox, will be a scripted musical comedy about a Spanish language teacher (Matthew Morrison) who supervises a high school glee club that’s seriously out of tune. Created by Ryan Murphy of “Nip/Tuck,” the show has a 13-episode guarantee and a story arc that seems influenced by “American Idol.” The teacher wants to get the club sing in perfect harmony and go all way to the nationals.

For an audience that has already embraced “Idol” and all the installments of “High School Musical,” “Glee” seems like the best idea no one has thought of – until now. Of course, in this age of synastry, “Glee” will have an accompanying soundtrack album comprised of hit songs from different eras.
