Martha Stewart opened up about her relationship with her father, Edward Kostyra, in her new Netflix documentary.

The famous homemaker, 83, recalled her dad’s angry reaction when she got engaged to Andrew Stewart. The couple met when Martha was an undergrad at Barnard College in New York City and Andrew was a law student at Yale University. They were set up by Martha’s classmate and Andrew’s sister.

Martha said she “fell in love” with Andrew after their first date and they got engaged soon after — which Kostyra was not happy about.

“I went home and told my dad, and my dad slapped me,” she shared. “Slapped me hard on my face and said, ‘No, you’re not marrying him. He’s a Jew.'”

“I remembered getting that slap,” she added. “I was not at all surprised because he was a bigot, and he was impulsive. But I said, ‘I’m gonna get married no matter what you think.'”

Martha said her mom, nicknamed “Big Martha,” helped her make her “beautiful” wedding dress.

“The wedding day was very happy,” she shared of the 1961 nuptials to Andrew. “It was the beginning of my life.”

The former “Martha Stewart Show” host grew up as one of six children in Nutley, New Jersey. Her mom was a school teacher and her father was a failed businessman.

Calling her father “a perfectionist,” Martha recalled, “Dad made each of us learn how to garden. He could grow anything. I was the ideal daughter. I wanted to learn, he had a lot to teach, and I listened.”

“My father was the handsomest father,” she continued. “He loved me. And it was very obvious to everybody that I was his favorite. He thought I was more like him than the other children. He got the job done that he was set out to do. Not his work work. He was a failure in work.”

Martha went on, “He could’ve done pretty much anything he wanted to do and he was stuck in a salesman job. He sometimes started the day off with a large glass of coffee and red wine. So is that an alcoholic? Maybe. But he never looked like a drunk. He never stumbled around and threw things and broke things. That wasn’t my father. But he was a dissatisfied, unhappy human being.”

Martha’s relationship with her dad grew more tense once she met Andrew while she was in college.

“We went out to dinner. He was very polite and handsome, and he had traveled a lot,” she recalled of the pair’s first date. “It was exciting to meet a sophisticated young man. And he had an American Express card, which was a very big deal in those days.”

“He was just intriguing, playful and nice. By the end of dinner I was madly in love,” Martha said. “Andy was so nice. Not at all like my father. He would send me money for a train ticket and I would visit him every single weekend up in Yale.”

Martha also revealed that she lost her virginity to Andrew at age 19. “I had never slept with anybody before this,” she said. “He was very aggressive and I liked it.”

Martha and Andrew got married in 1961 and welcomed their daughter, Alexis Stewart, four years later.

The famous cook’s father died in 1979 while she was still married to Andrew. Her mom died in 2007.

Martha and Andrew got divorced in 1990 and Andrew later married Martha’s assistant, Robyn Fairclough.

In the Netflix documentary, Martha claimed that Andrew cheated with Fairclough. She also alleged that she had her own affair that Andrew didn’t know about.

“Young women, listen to my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of s–t,” Martha said. “Get out of that marriage.”

In 2020, Stewart reflected on her “terrible” divorce from Andrew and shared that the exes hadn’t spoken.

“Getting divorced was a terrible thing for me, because we were the first to divorce in my family,” she told People. “And that we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful.”

“Martha” is streaming on Netflix.
