LOS ANGELES — Mary Tyler Moore will receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, the actor’s union announced Thursday.
Moore, 74, got her start on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and later starred in the ground-breaking TV sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in addition to numerous movie roles and appearances on Broadway.
She is also noted for her philanthropic efforts to raise awareness for juvenile diabetes, which she suffers from.
“She tackled difficult subject matter in film and on Broadway … [and] turned her public recognition into a catalyst to draw attention to critical and deeply personal health and social issues,” Screen Actors Guild National President Ken Howard said in a statement.
“She truly embodies the spirit behind SAG’s Life Achievement Award, and we are honored to proclaim her as its 48th recipient,” he added.
The 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be televised live on TNT and TBS Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at 8:00pm ET.
