IMAX screens originally showcased nature and science films in 3-D, but these are starting to look like endangered species as the large-format theaters have become the prime cash-generating locale for Hollywood blockbusters like “Avatar.” Warner Bros. was able to secure the coveted Lincoln Square IMAX on the Upper West Side for just a one-week run for “Hubble 3D,” a spectacular, Leonardo DiCaprio-narrated space documentary opening Friday. It will also be playing an opened-ended run at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, but on Broadway it will have to make way on March 26 for DreamWorks Animation’s 3-D “How to Train Your Dragon.” Meanwhile, Manhattan’s three other commercial IMAX screens — the MUCH smaller ones at the Empire, the Kips Bay and the 34th Street — will continue playing Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland,” which is being evicted from the Lincoln Square this week because of the screen crunch. The borough’s oldest IMAX venue, at the American Museum of Natural History, continues to show nature films.
