I was suprised to find the 70-year-old Fair Theatre — which I dubbed “New York’s Last Grindhouse” in an article timed to the release of that ill-fated Weinstein project — suddenly pop up in The Post’s movie clock the other day. Four Bollywood titles are listed, which is impressive considering that the other two Bollywood houses in Queens, the Eagle in Jackson Heights and the Bombay in Fresh Meadows, have never made it into the movie clock. But has the Fair really given up seedy programming? Contributors at Cinema Treasures claim the Bollywood offerings are just the Fair’s latest attempt to comply with the city’s 60/40 law, allowing the minority of the Fair’s six screens to continue showing porno. (When I visited there in mid-March, the main screen was showing “The Prestige” and two other screens displayed old “Star Wars” movies, while most of the patrons were occupied watching gay porno and each other). Trolling the web today, I turned up this recent piece from Gay City News that vividly describes the social scene at the Fair.
