“Toy Story 3” is being produced in 3-D, claims former Disney exec Jeffrey Katzenberg. Jeff, who famously stormed out of the Mouse House to co-found Dreamworks after producing “The Lion King” for Disney, let the cat out of the bag at a Wall Street conference yesterday. (Disney told the Hollywood Reporter they were “not ready to talk about it,” which sounds like a non-denial to me). Katzenberg says DreamWorks has a couple of 3-D ‘toons in the works for 2009 and is very bullish about the process, both for new and vintage live-action titles like “The Godfather” and “Lawrence of Arabia.” I reported last year that three-dimensional reissues of “The Wizard of Oz” and “Gone With the Wind” were under consideration for the third coming of 3-D, which had its first vogue in the 1950’s with films like “Bwana Devil” and a had a second wave in the mid-80s that included the unfortunate “Jaws 3-D.” A 3-D conversion of Disney’s new toon “Meet the Robinsons” opens Friday (with a $13.50 admission fee for adults at most Manhattan theaters offering it) and James Cameron is producing his 2009 release “Atavar” in 3-D. Meanwhile, Katzenberg isn’t keen on either of the two new high-definition home video formats, Blu-ray or HD DVD. He doesn’t think either one is different enough from DVD to displace that format. I’d second that notion.
