Sony, which could use some good news right now, is not only anticipating the release of the blockbusting “Spider-Man 3” but the latest figures which put its Blu-ray high-definition DVD format far ahead of the competing HD DVD. Though HD DVD launched two months ahead of Blu-ray last April, figures for the first quarter have Blu-ray ahead 70 percent to 30 percent. According to figures in Home Media Magazine, “The Departed,” the biggest new title to debut in both formats, sold $53,640 on Blu-ray versus 31,590 for HD DVD. While the Blu-ray margin continues to grow — In March, it was 333,980 for Blu-ray against 119,570 for HD DVD — those numbers are tiny compared to the sale of standard DVDs, which some analysts believe will continue to dominate until downloads become the dominant mode of distribution.
