With a reported budget of $150 million, “Beowulf” will open just “respectably” with around $30 million over the weekend, says Steve Mason of Fantasy Moguls after crunching early Friday numbers. A couple of weeks ago, Mase was calling for a $50 million-plus opening based on early tracking. Much worse news for the other two wide openers: Mase projects that “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” from Fox Walden will open at a hair over $10 million for three days. And, as expected, audiences are avoiding “Love in the Time of Cholera” like the plague and it should finish the weekend with a pitiful $1.85 million and a sickly per-venue of $2,178 that should hasten its departure from holiday screens.
