Despite publicity generated by the deaths of star Bernie Mac and cameo player Isaac Hayes, “Soul Men” has tanked, just like a long list of other Weinstein Co. projects distributed by MGM. “Soul Men” may be these two struggling entities’ last together; it’s unclear whether MGM is still going to be releasing TWC’s “Hurricane Season,” which was yanked from a Christmas Day berth after another sports movie, “The Express,” flopped. “Soul Men” died in sixth place with $5.6 million, well below expecations. “Zack & Miri Make a Porno,” which the Weinsteins distributed themselves at the last minute, had a respectable hold and landed in fifth place with $6.5 million, just behind “Changeling” in fourth with a decent $7.3 while “HSM3” passed the $75 million mark with another $9.3 million in third place. DreamWorks Animation’s “Madagascar: Back 2 Africa” opened at the higher end of expectation with a whopping $63 million, and Universal’s teen comedy “Role Models” bucked the genre’s sagging recent trajectory and surprised with a stronger-than-predicted $19.3 million in second place. Does this mean McLovin is now a bigger draw than Seth Rogen?
