“Race to Witch Mountain,” a Disney re-invention of a short-lived ’70s franchise, will edge “Watchmen” out of first place this weekend,

Steve Mason at Big Hollywood. Mase thinks “Watchmen” — which failed to post expected summer blockbuster-level numbers last weekend — will drop a whopping 60 percent to $22.1 million and end up around $600,000 behind “Race to Witch Mountain” starring Dwayne Johnson. Which would not be a total surprise, given the lethal word of mouth “Watchmen” has been generating among non-fanboys. Another ’70s reboot, “Last House on the Left,” will finish in the show position with $18.2M, Mase prognosticates. The only other wide opening is Fox Searchlight’s “Miss March,” which Mase predicts will be battling the durable Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” for sixth place with around $5 million apiece. The latter may remarkably still be able to hang in the top ten right up until its DVD debut on March 31.
