Box Office: Family Values
Business was up 79 percent over the dismal post-Labor Day weekend, with the Coen Brothers scoring their best-ever opening with one of their weaker films, “Burn After Reading” thanks to the Messrs. Pitt and Clooney in ensemble roles. The $19.4 million three-day-take also set a record for Focus Features. The Coens pulled an upset over Tyler Perry — an auteur who won’t let Lionsgate screen his movies for us mean critics — and “The Family That Preys” with $18 million. The wretched “Righteous Kill” with Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino collected $16.5 million from curiosity seekers. And absymal, all-star remake of “The Women” debuted with $10.1 million — the most successful and final opening in the brief history of Picturehouse. Another Time Warner specialized film arm, Warner Independent, also bowed out of existence with “Towelhead” on four screens for a quite decent $13,250 average.
