The outlook is not so rosy for “X-Files: I Want to Believe,” with Mase predicting $17 million — a third straight disappointment for Fox, which is on a rare losing streak with “Meet Dave” and “Space Chimps.” I personally think there’s a good chance “X-Files” will end up in fourth place behind “Mamma Mia!,” which Mase is predicting at $16.7 million. “Mamma Mia!” increased its business 8 percent from Monday to Tuesday and is doing comparable business to “Hairspray,” which finished up with $118 million. Skewing older, I think “Mamma Mia!” will have longer legs and end up north of $125 domestic. And it’s already doing gangbusters business overseas. What’s the problem with “X-Files”? Well, the last movie, a decade ago, opened to $30 million, but even many of the TV series’ fans had bailed by the time it ended six years ago. Early reviews at RT (which, like Fox and the Post, is a unit of News Corp.) are running a rotten 33 percent. My review will appear on Friday, but in three words, this movie is TV Writ Large.
