The delightful “Juno” scored one of the year’s best limited openings, averaging $60,000 per venue at seven locations. Anecdotal evidence suggets this is the rare teen comedy that will strongly appeal to older audiences as well; my 92-year-old Aunt Rose says she wants to see it, and a sixty-something academy member tells me he and his pals are eagerly awaiting their screeners from Fox Searchlight. The “Juno” numbers somewhat overshadowed the opening of the wonderful “Atonement.” It posted a solid $25,800 per venue at 32 locations, a figure Steve Mason at Fantasy Moguls calls disappointing while suggesting this epic romantic drama may be too dark for the current marketplace. Meanwhile, “Grace is Gone” is predictably the latest casualty of the public’s indifference to war-oriented movies, drawing a scant $7,405 per venue at four locations. Universal is trying to escape the curse by marketing “Charlie Wilson’s War” (opening December 21) as a comedy, but I wonder if this strategy will fool the public.
