Sony’s reboot of “The Karate Kid” pulled an upset, collecting an estimated $56 million over three days, well ahead of expectations. And that’s even despite a bloated 140-minute running that cost a show or two daily. With a reported cost of only $40 million — thanks to the participation of Red China, where it was shot — this is a star-making role for Jaden Smith, whose parents Will and Jada Pinkett Smith produced. And a potentially lucrative new francise, which is more than you can say for Fox’s “The A-Team,” the abortive TV transfer that Team Smith upset.

Almost universally predicted to win the weekend based on audience tracking surveys, “The A-Team” opened to an estimated $26 million — a very disappointing showing for a very heavily promoted flick with a reported pricetag of $110 million, which may not include all the costs of more than a decade in development.

The two flicks dethroned the “Shrek” fourquel, which dipped to $13.8M and third place after three weeks at No. 1. Overall, business was up 10 percent from the same weekend a year ago after a pair of weekends that lagged behind 2009 numbers.
