Poor Michael Sheen was snubbed again on Oscar nomination morning for “Frost/Nixon” (unlike co-star Frank Langella, who played Nixon to his Frost), just as he was for “The Queen” (where Oscar winner Helen Mirren had the title role opposite Sheen’s Tony Blair). But Steve Mason at Big Hollywood is predicting Sheen will be able to console himself with top billing in the weekend’s No. 1 box office attraction in North America, which is expected to do a lot better than newly-minted Best Picture nominee “Frost Nixon.” That would be…Screen Gems’ “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,” the third installment in the trilogy, which Mase predicts will handily lead with $24.34 million over three days. It turns out Sheen played a werewolf in the first “Underworld,” which starred his girlfriend at the time Kate Beckinsale, who ended up marrying director Len Wiseman. Sheen understandably appeared only in flashbacks in the first sequel, also directed by Wiseman. For the third go-round, a prequel, Beckinsale is MIA and Sheen is back with top billing under a different director. Unlike Sheen’s other current film, “Rise of the Lycans” was not screened in advance for critics, though there are some decent notices in Australia’s The Age and London’s Daily Mirror. As for “Frost/Nixon,” which is expanding to 900 screens, Mase is predicting a dismal 14th place finish with a big $3.35 million over three days. The weekend’s only other new wide release is the fantasy “Inkheart” starring Brendan Fraser another New Line shelfie from Warner Bros. that rates 1.5 stars from Kyle Smith Mase predicts $13.2 million and fourth place behind holdovers “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” and the Oscar-snubbed “Gran Torino.”
