Fox’s thriller “Taken” with Liam Neeson took a whopping estimated $24 million over the weekend, upending Hollywood’s longtime assumption that Super Bowl Sunday isn’t a great time to open male-driven flicks. The horror movie “The Univited” opened in third place (after “Paul Blart”) with $10.5 million, while more traditional fare for this weekend, the chick flick “New in Town” starring Renee Zellweger managed a feeble $6.7M in eight place. The last two of Oscar’s Best Picture nominees flopped miserably in their first weekend in wide release. “The Reader” managed a dismal $2.3 million at 1,002 concentration camps in 15th place, while “Milk” soured with a pathetic at 882 gay bars in 18th place. If even their respective stars, Kate Winslet and Sean Penn, win Best Actress and Best Actor on Oscar night, it’s not going to help business, since recent history suggests that most of this kind of movie’s earnings comes in the period right after nominations. This year, only “Slumdog Millionaire” has shown a significant bump on a per-location basis.
