We don’t generally pay much attention to foreign box office reports, but it’s hard to ignore when the first big event movie of the summer season gets clobbered by the fifth installment of a modestly-budgeted franchise on its opening day in Australia.
Marvel Studios and Paramount’s supposedly highly anticipapted “Thor” may star Aussie Chris Hemsworth, but it still went down to a crushing defeat Thursday at the hands of “Fast Five,” the latest installment of the “Fast and the Furious” series starring Vin Diesel and The Rock.
According to Deadline, Universal’s “Fast Five” posted an estimated $2.2 million in U.S dollars on its second day down under, handily beating “Thor” with $1.5 million for its opening day. This despite a 3-D surcharge for “Thor,” which is playing at an identical number of theaters as “Fast Five.”
“Fast Five” opens in the U.S. a week from tomorrow, officially a week before the start of Hollywood’s summer season. If the Aussie opening of “Thor” is any indication, Marvel and Paramount may have another “The Hulk” on their hands.
