An article in the Post’s business department last week by Peter Lauria dubbed “Lions for Lambs” a “Ticking Tom Bomb” and raised concerns it could hurt MGM’s attempts to revive its dormant United Artists label as a vehicle to raise money for feature production (The once-mighty MGM is basically a distribution-only company, servicing mostly a string of duds from the Weinsteins, Sidney Kimmel and other indie producers). Well, the latest tracking numbers indicate that “Lions for Lambs” will post the worst opening numbers of Tom Cruise’s career as a star (as nominal co-head of UA, he also co-produced with his longtime partner Paula Wagner). Steve Mason of Fantasy Moguls is predicting this political drama with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford (the latter also directed), whose reviews are running only 32 percent positive at Rotten Tomatoes will do around $10.7 million, good for no more than a fourth-place finish. Mase thinks that “American Gangster” will hold onto the No. 1 spot in its second week with $26.7 million, edging out “Fred Claus” (RT: “rotten” at 33 percent positive) which he predicts will open at the lower end of expectations with $25.7 million. Kyle will offer his opinion of “Lions” and “Fred” in Friday’s paper, as well as reviewing the only other wide opening, the thriller “P2,” which Mase foresees as D.O.A. in seventh place with $3.3 million. Three out of the four reviews so far at RT are positive, but they are from exceedingly obscure outlets.
