Disney’s release of DreamWorks “The Help” has done much better than expected since opening on Wednesday — an estimated $9.9 million for its first two days. Heading into the weekend with terrific word of mouth (A+ at CinemScore) if mixed reviews, it could very well end up at No. 1, depending on how much it overperforms and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” drops in its second weekend. “Apes” will face direct competition from another new wide release, “Final Destination 5,” and all three films could end up slugging it out in the mid-’20s. Sony’s “30 Minutes or Less” is predicted to finish in the mid-teens, with Fox’s “Glee the 3-D Concert Movie” forecast for a finish in the single digits. This is likely my last box-office report until after Labor Day; the fate of the rest of the summer season’s releases is just too depressing to contemplate and besides, I’m taking a much-needed vacation.
