The out-of-competition premiere of Rob Marshall’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’’ on May 14 and the first showing of Pedro Almodovar’s “The Skin I Inhabit’’ are the main surprises in the slate unveiled today by the Cannes Film Festival.

Terrence Malick’s widely expected and eagerly anticipated “The Tree of Life’’ with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn is the sole film by a U.S. director in the competition. Other English-language films in the competition include Danish helmer Nicolas Winding Refn’s Los Angeles-set “Drive’’ starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, “This Must Be the Place” starring Sean Penn from Italy’s Paolo Sorrentino, and British director Lynn Ramsey’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin’’ starring Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly.

Among the other English-language films showing out of competition, are Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris,’’ the May 11 opener with Owen Wilson, and Jodie Foster’s “The Beaver,’’ which opens in the United States on May 4.
