Cannes: ‘R U There’
Presented outside the competition in the Un Certain Regard program, David VerBeek’s “R U There” is essentially “Lost in Translation” for the video game set. Stijn Koomen is a top gamer participating in a tournament in Taiwan who suffers a possibly psychosomatic shoulder injury that puts him out of action. He hooks up with a masseusse (Ke Huan-Ru), but struggles to have as meaningful a relationship with her in real life as he does in the virtual reality of “Second Life,” where they interact as avatars. Though sluggishly paced in spots, “Ru U There” got a healthy round of applause at a press screening.
