Artsy doesn’t begin to describe Cam Archer’s “Shit Year,” a self-conscious oddity starring an oddly compelling Ellen Barkin as an actress who decides to retire after 30 years in the business. She moves to a remote house in the woods, where she mocks her craftsy neighbor (Melora Walters) and fantasizes about the 22-year-old co-star (and possibly more) of her last play. Fantasy alternates with reality as she conducts existential conversations with her brother (Bob Einstein, Albert Brooks’ brother, in a rare movie role) and a woman (Theresa Randle) who seems to be a character in a sci-fi movie. Shot in high-contrast black and white, “Shit Year” played as part of the Director’s Fortnight, which runs alongside the Cannes festival but is not officially a part of it. It’s the sort of movie that plays mostly at festivals. It might get a week at the IFC Center, which I believe showed Archer’s debut feature, “Wild Tigers I Have Known.”
