He might want to consider going back to stripping before this.

News broke Saturday that Channing Tatum, fresh off the male exotic dance drama “Magic Mike XXL,” has signed up to portray the mutant superhero Gambit in a potential franchise-launching film tentatively scheduled for fall 2016.

Rumors swirled last week that the actor was walking away from the role, but a deal was apparently hammered out.

Gambit will be spun off from the “X-Men” universe, so it could come with a built-in fanbase, but still. It could also be a disaster.

Don’t do it, Channing. There’s still time to back out. Call your lawyers right now and get them searching for a loophole in that contract.

Here are four reasons why he should ditch Gambit:

No one cares about this character

We’ve already gotten Gambit once on-screen, in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” with Taylor Kitsch in the role — and audiences just shrugged. No one was marching on the White House demanding a solo adventure.

Even among the Comic Con crowd, Gambit is not exactly A-list. Publisher Marvel has launched several solo series — all of which were swiftly canceled.

You will have to strap on a bad Cajun accent

Gambit (real name: Remy Etienne LeBeau) is from New Orleans and, as such, speaks with a hammy Cajun twang.

Channing, mon frère, you need to ask yourself a serious question: Are you a good enough actor to pull this off? Will it just come off looking silly no matter what you do?

His power is lame

Wolverine has indestructible claws. Nightcrawler can teleport. Storm can control the weather.

Are you a superhero or the third member of Penn and Teller?

There are too many superhero movies

If there aren’t now, there certainly will be by the time “Gambit” is scheduled to come out. With the glut, you’d have to figure that the smaller, less-established characters and franchises are going to take the hit while pre-existing juggernauts like “Avengers” will continue to earn bank.

Has the superhero wave crested? We’ll know in a few years, but betting on something like Gambit doesn’t seem like the smartest play right now.
