Universal has moved Mike Nichols “Charlie Wilson’s War” with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts up four days from an originally planned Christmas Day opening. Adam Fogelson, the studio’s president of marketing and distribution, says in a release: “We’ve seen how strongly Charlie Wilson’s War plays and can’t wait to get it in front of audiences everywhere. We are confident that their positive word-of-mouth will be one of the things that helps us continue playing strongly through this terrific moviegoing period.” Or maybe they just realized people weren’t going to rush out and see a comedy about a war in Afghanistan after opening their presents.

“Charlie” joins four other wide releases slated for Dec. 21: putative blockbuster “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” with Nicholas Cage and Helen Mirren, the musical “Sweeney Todd” starring Johnny Depp, “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” a musical biopic satire with John C. Reilly and “P.S. I Love You,” a weepie starring Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler. Don’t be surprised if one or two of these moves to Wednesday, December 19.
