Chris Evans is officially retiring his Captain America shield.

After eight years of playing the Marvel superhero, the actor announced Thursday that he’d performed his last scene.

“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least,” the 37-year-old star tweeted. “To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful,” he said.

Playing the role “has been an honor,” added Evans, who first donned the Captain America costume in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.”

Fans and stars alike expressed their sadness over the news.

“I’m not crying. I’m weeping. There’s a difference,” tweeted Ryan Reynolds, who’s portrayed the Marvel Comics character “Deadpool” and the superhero Green Lantern.

“What a run you had,” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson also tweeted. “Congrats on breathing life into such an iconic character. Keep on keepin’ on.”

Marvel cast Evans for the role of Steve Rogers — a young guy from Brooklyn who becomes a super-soldier with the help of a US Army serum — in 2010. Evans reprised the role in three additional “Captain America” flicks and four “Avengers” movies, as well as cameo in a number of other Marvel films.

The actor hinted that he was thinking about calling it quits in a March interview with the New York Times saying, “You want to get off the train before they push you off.”

Fans are concerned Evans’ announced exit means the character will be killed off in the still-untitled “Avengers 4” movie. But writers at GameSpot cautioned the tweet might be a red herring, since directors Joe and Anthony Russo “have gone to great lengths to protect plot reveals.”
