Diablo Cody has, in the past week, been simultaneously celebrating the Emmy win for “United States of Tara” star Toni Collette and bemoaning the dismal box-office showing of “Jennifer’s Body.” But the screenwriter has also found time to announce a new project, Variety reports: She’ll write and produce a film based on “Sweet Valley High,” Francine Pascal’s long-running young-adult book series about Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield, impossibly gorgeous blonde twins at a California high school.
The series, which started in the ’80s and ran in various incarnations until 2003, was briefly reinvented as a lifeless mid-’90s TV show, quickly forgotten. But this project bodes well. You may have issues with Cody’s campy writing style (and boy, the critics definitely have this time around), but her quippy tweets on the subject showcase a depth of knowledge about the subject matter that anyone who followed the Wakefield twins with any devotion will appreciate:
“I brought up the Fiat in every pitch. It’s important.”
“I’ve visited the Dairi Burger many times. And I’m thinking Michael Cera would be better for Bruce. (Kidding).”
“Why would Enid need a Sidekick? No one’s going to call her.”
And, as quoted on Jezebel, “You have no idea how many bitches I took down to do this project. I went ‘full Jessica.’ Believe it.”
Here’s hoping she does justice to the “bad” twin, who we like to think of as Scarlett O’Hara lite.
