The great documentarian Les Blank died in 2013 — two years after his mentor, Richard Leacock — but both are warmly present in this set of interviews Blank did with his teacher in France 15 years ago.

Leacock taught a generation of filmmakers even as he made documentaries ranging from “Monterey Pop” to “Happy Mother’s Day,” a wry record of the 1963 circus surrounding a North Dakota mother’s newborn quintuplets that’s being shown with this feature.

Blank’s co-director, Gina Leibrecht, edited together his talks with Leacock, along with clips from Leacock’s films about John F. Kennedy’s 1960 campaign, Leonard Bernstein in Israel, and many others.

The result is quite a ramble: Leacock talks about how equipment influences filmmaking, the making of a custard and the wanderings of his cat. Through it all, happily, his company is a pleasure.
