Jazz singer and comedian Sophie Tucker (1887-1966), the self-proclaimed “Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” was still one of the best known entertainers of the 20th century when she died, but has since drifted into relative obscurity.

William Gazecki’s exhaustive documentary covers a 60-year career that began in vaudeville (where the hefty former Orthodox Jew initially performed in blackface) and included stints on Broadway and in radio, movies and TV, though she was probably best-known as a nightclub performer. She had three husbands and relationships with several women.

There are lots of archival clips, photos and interviews with celebrities who knew her, such as Tony Bennett and Barbara Walters. Too much screen time is devoted to producers Lloyd and Susan Ecker, fans who serve as on-screen narrators and serve up tidbits from Tucker’s 400 scrapbooks, some of which, frankly, seem highly improbable.
